May 7, 1976 – June 26, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we share the peaceful passing of Timothy Eugene Smith, treasured husband, father, son, brother, and uncle. Born on May 7, 1976, Tim left us too soon on June 26, 2024, at the age of 48. He will be greatly missed by his wife Meaghan (née Collins), son Lucas Paul (7), daughter Olivia Jane (5), parents Joseph Lynn and Patricia, sister Kelly Rossi (Anthony), niece Glynis, and nephew Aaron.

Loyal and brave, with an enthusiastic and determined personality, Tim will be long remembered for the significant impact he had on those around him. He was raised in Northern Virginia and was a proud member of the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company in Loudoun County. As a firefighter, Tim demonstrated courage and dedication to serving his community and was awarded Rookie of the Year, which was among his proudest honors. His friendships from the fire department have endured over the years and the miles.

 Tim was truly multi-faceted, with varied interests and passions. A sports enthusiast, he was a fervent and loud supporter of the Washington Capitals and often talked hockey with Lucas. Tim loved all things spicy, with wasabi-laden sushi topping his list of favorites and relished introducing others to the pleasure of fiery foods. His backyard garden was his pride and joy, where he naturally enjoyed cultivating, and consuming, the hottest of peppers. Tim’s favorite recreational activities included boating and water skiing at his family’s house at High Rock Lake in Lexington, NC, riding his Harley, and playing Ghost with his dad. He also loved traveling to Ocean City, Hawaii, and his favorite destination, Cancun, where he vacationed yearly with extended family and created lasting memories with his children.

Tim cared deeply for animals and rescued his pups Roxy, Bo, and Lexi and later his stray kitten, Rosie. He was known in the neighborhood for keeping the local squirrels’ (One Eye, Butterball, and Barbara Bush) bellies full of peanuts. Passionate about the outdoors, Tim enjoyed camping, fire building, and honing his survival skills.

While Tim had many advanced technical certifications in the IT field, he was largely self-taught. He was employed as a Senior Systems Engineer with ePlus, Inc. for over 18 years and was an important contributor to the company’s success.

Tim left behind a legacy of loyalty, strength, and determination. He taught those around him to live life to the fullest. While his accomplishments included becoming one of the best high school high-jumpers in Virginia, his greatest and most lasting legacy and proudest achievement were his children and family. He delighted in Lucas and Olivia, and in being a work-from-home dad which allowed him a daily front-row seat to their childhood. Nothing pleased him more than escorting Olivia to her first father-daughter dance and he was the proudest parent when Lucas was awarded his jiu-jitsu gi. Tim was devoted to Meaghan, his beloved wife of ten years, who loved and cared for him faithfully in good times as well as bad.

A visitation for Tim will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2024, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Good Samaritan Funeral Home, Denver, NC. The funeral Mass will take place Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 11:00am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Denver, NC. Following the funeral service, a celebration of Tim’s life will be held at 2:00pm at Vesuvius Vineyards, Denver, NC.

February 24, 1940 – May 14, 2024

Donald George Urban, 84, of Denver NC passed away on May 14, 2024. He was born on February 24, 1940 in Teaneck, NJ to the late Ernest and Dorothy Urban. Don graduated from Teaneck High School in 1958 and attended classes at Pace University in Westchester, NY in 1968.

Don proudly served in the United States Army National Guard at Fort Dix during a 12–18-month service.

Don worked hard throughout his life. In his youth he worked at the US Postal Service as a mail carrier. He then went onto working as a computer programmer at Berlex Laboratories Inc, and eventually retired from Bank of America as a computer programmer.

Don married the love of his life Marie (Locovare) Urban on September 11, 1965. They have two children, Elizabeth and Scott.

Don loved camping with his family in the Berkshires in Massachusetts. As a young man, he had his pilot license and would fly up to Massachusetts to visit his family. He enjoyed bowling and was secretary of his bowling league. He was a fan of Country and BlueGrass Music and could play the piano by ear, He was an amateur astronomer and often organized star parties in Massachusetts for the members of the Rockland Astronomy Club of Rockland County, NY. After moving to IL, Don became an avid cribbage player, both in local grass root clubs and at weekend tournaments. He would often travel to Reno, NV to participate in tournaments.

Don was a member of Cribbage Club 213 in Crystal Lake, IL from 2006 to 2018, winning the championship four times. He was also a member of clubs in Elgin, IL and Kenosha, WI. In that time, he visited six other clubs. He earned his Grass Roots Bronze Award in 2012 and Silver in 2019.

In tournament play, Don qualified for points in 165 events from 2006-2019, winning 11 of them and finishing second in 9 others. He earned his Master Award in 2012 and Grand Master Award in 2015. He was just 49 points shy of his Life Master Award.

Don moved to many places throughout his lifetime including Closter, NJ from 1967 to 2020, Marengo, IL from 2006 to 2020, and eventually settling in Denver, NC from 2020-2024 to be closer to his family. When moving to Denver, NC he discovered that there was no active cribbage club, so he worked hard and founded Tar Heel 443 Cribbage Club in Denver and won the championship three years ago. In his honor, the Denver, NC club has been renamed to Don Urban’s Tar Heel 443 Cribbage Club,

Left to cherish Don’s memory is his loving wife of 58 years Marie; children Elizabeth (Anthony) Montanaro of Woodstock, IL and Scott (Melinda) Urban of Denver, NC; grandchildren Frank Montanaro, Mitchell Montanaro, and Jessica Bennett; and brothers Richard, Kenneth, and Steven Urban.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday June 8, 2024, at 11:00AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Denver, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the mass beginning at 10:00AM. Inurnment will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Lincolnton NC.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Joseph Charles Waryold of Denver, NC. Joe passed away peacefully at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House in the early morning on May 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family in his final moments. A beloved husband, father and grandfather who lived a richly beautiful life until age 90. The family is particularly pleased to know that Joe celebrated his 90^th birthday with a surprise party with family and friends.

Joe was born to Joseph John Waryold and Henrietta Ida Zinsmeister (“Dolly”), on February 4, 1934, In Astoria, NY. Joe is a veteran of the United States Navy where he served on the USS Hornet aircraft carrier. He retired in 1991 from Royal Insurance working in loss prevention. He was a talented handy man who loved building and construction. He was a self-taught contractor and builder who designed and built and/or renovated several homes. One of which he built a rustic cabin in the Adirondack mountains from repurposed materials before recycling became a trend. Joe had many interests – animal lover, skier, golfer, motorcycle rider, traveler, attending Navy reunions, and helping his children with projects in their homes. In his younger years, he enjoyed the camaraderie as an active volunteer and past President of the Mountainville, NY Fire Department

Joe’s loving spirit is carried on by his beloved wife of 69 years, Joan and their children Joseph Jr. (Anne), Diane, and Thomas, his younger sister Phyllis Taphouse, brother-in-law Roger Gordon, along with grandchildren Meghan Papillon (Ben), Stephen Waryold, Kathy Waryold, great grandchildren Jasper and Lyle Papillon, and nieces Doreen Serrian (Jim), Howie Taphouse, Glen Taphouse (Tonya), Claudia Keene (Vince), Carolyn Teal, Bill Adams (Nikki), Kay Adams DesLoge (Nate), Eileen Sercu, Deborah Luceri (David), Susan Grecco, Roger Gordan (Donna), Robert Gordan, Ronald Gordan (Kimberely) and grandnieces and nephews Jessica Adams, Jordan Cheney (Warren), Austin Keene, James Adams (Chelsea), Olivia Adams, Chase Adams, Mark Adams, Erica Adams, Brianna Taphouse, Brandonn Taphouse, Kyle Serrian, Justin Serrian, Adrianne Luceri, Arianna Luceri, Christopher Luceri, and Gianni Luceri, Ryan Gordon, Christopher Gordon, Nicole Gordon.

Preceding him in peace were his parents Joseph and “Dolly” Waryold, his Aunt Anne Palm, older sister Lorraine Adams and her husband Jim, brother-in-law Howard Taphouse, grandson Donovan Waryold, nephew Brian Adams, and Dave Teal.

A Catholic Mass will be held to honor Joseph on Friday May 31^st at 1pm at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Denver, NC. Family will receive friends following the mass. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by The Good Samaritan Funeral Home of Denver, NC. Inurnment will take place at the Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.

Richard Flack, 91, of Denver, N.C. (formerly of Indiana), passed away surrounded by family, on Monday, April 16, 2024.

He was born July 14, 1932, in Clune (formerly known as Coal Run), the son of Edward Flack and Mary Jane Wasylink. He was one of four siblings. He married his wife, Patricia, on Aug. 30, 1958; she preceded him in death on Sept. 9, 2022.

Rich was a U.S. Army veteran, volunteering for the draft in 1954. He became a paratrooper at Fort Bragg, N.C., serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. After the military, he attended Penn State Forestry School. He also played the trumpet in a band. He worked as a mine safety inspector for R&P Coal. He served as president of the Indiana District Council, Holmes Safety Association from 1980-1991. He was also a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and exploring the wilderness. He especially loved spending time with his five grandchildren.

Rich is survived by his three brothers, Edward, of Westfield, N.J., Robert, of Indiana, and Jerry (Linda), of Homer City; three children: Raymond Flack, Laura Tieber and husband Joe, and Tricia Theodore and husband Tom; and five grandchildren: Brianna Tieber, Julia Tieber, Dominique Theodore, Marissa Theodore and Joseph Tieber III.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 26, 2024 at 11:00am at Holy Spirit Catholic Church Denver, NC.  Burial will take place at a later date.

Lucille (Lou) Ann Ronco Fea, 84, of Iron Station, North Carolina, peacefully departed this life on February 21, 2024.   A funeral Mass in her honor will be celebrated at 4:00 PM on Monday, March 11, 2024, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, located at 537 (Business) Highway 16, Denver, North Carolina. The family will receive friends before the funeral Mass from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. 

Born on March 10, 1939, in Newark, NJ, Lou was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Jennie Ronco. She is now reunited in heaven with her husband, Anthony Fea, her sister, Aurora Bernard, and her parents.

Lou was the matriarch and spiritual leader of her family. She adored her roles as a nurturing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and the 62 years she spent as a devoted wife.  She instilled a love for family, quality time, and her Italian heritage. Her love was overflowing and extended to all who joined her Sunday feasts on Fea Lane.

Beyond her immediate family, Lou impacted many lives through her work at MaryVale Daycare School , NorthEast Health and Fitness Center, and East Lincoln Christian Ministries.  Together with her husband, they created Marie’s Restaurant and The Coffee Shop, which became beloved community staples in Far Hills and Bernardsville, New Jersey.

Lou’s legacy lives on in her children: Anthony, Patrick, Matthew (Colleen), Sisto, and daughter Laura (Darrell) Suggs; her grandchildren: Dawn (Cam) Huffman, Alyssa (Tyler) Parries, Christina (Chris) Boyle, Andrew Fea, Joshua (Sarah), Christian and Anna Suggs, Michael and Mary Elizabeth Fea, Anthony (Sierra) Fea and Brad Gowan, Elena (Kevin) Tornillo, Sisto, Eva, Lauran, and Jennifer Fea; and her great-grandchildren:  Carter Huffman, Lucy Boyle and Charlie Tornillo. 

As we honor Lou’s memory, let us carry forward her legacy of wisdom, grace, and faith. She will forever remain in our hearts as our guardian, guiding us with her spirit of unwavering strength and unconditional love.

Anthony “Tony” Vincent Bruno Jr. passed away at his home in Denver, North Carolina, in the early hours of Monday, January 1, 2024, after a lengthy illness. He was born on July 21, 1941, in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts to Anthony Vincent Bruno and Helen Geoghan Bruno.

Tony was baptized Roman Catholic and proudly served in the United States Army. He graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, MA in 1968. After earning his degree, Tony had a career as a restaurateur, owning and operating Italian eateries Bruno’s and Anthony’s Northend. Later he worked in government service working for the Internal Revenue Service.

Tony was an avid golfer and reader. He was a loyal fan of the New England Patriots.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Virginia Jacobellis Bruno; his two sons Scott A. Bruno of Iron Station, NC and Gary M. Bruno of East Falmouth, MA; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 11:00AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Denver, NC.

Tony will be laid to rest by his immediate family at Salisbury National Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Linda Payne, 75, of Denver, North Carolina, passed away on November 27th, 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Linda was born on December 15th, 1947, to Charles and Edna Rickards in Salisbury, Maryland. After graduating from Stephen Decatur High School in 1965, she went on to work 33 years in software management.  She had a compassionate and giving heart towards others. She would have her husband stop on the side of the road to give money to people who needed it. She was soft hearted. She also participated in the RCIA program with her husband at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Denver, NC. She loved her family and loved others, and she will always be her husband Ron’s “Linda Bear”.

Besides her parents, Linda is preceded in death by her step-son Ernest Ronald Payne Jr.

Linda is survived by her loving husband of 34 years Ernest Payne, her siblings Ginger Wilkinson and Eric Rickards, her 2 sons Matthew and Charles, her 2 granddaughters Alyssa and Brittany, and 4 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 11:00AM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church; 537 N NC 16 Business Denver, NC 28037. Visitation will be held prior to the mass from 10:00AM-10:50AM in the church.

Daniel James Cooper, 70, of Sherrills Ford, passed away, October 31, 2023 at Carolina Caring Hospice House in Sherrills Ford, NC.

Dan was born September 14, 1953 in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late William Charleston Cooper and Joan Doran Cooper. He attended the University of Delaware and on October 15, 1977, he married Nancy Schuler Cooper, who survives. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Denver, NC, was retired from Bojangles, Inc and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles Fan.

In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by three daughters, Rachel Ann Terrell (Donald), Rebecca Lynne Grobe (Nicholas), Danielle Gean Nowaskie (Matthew); eight grandchildren, Abigail Hayhurst, Anna Schuler, Hailey Terrell, Samantha Grobe, Cooper Grobe, Luke Nowaskie, Josephine Nowaskie, Daniel Terrell; two brothers, John Cooper, Billy Cooper and one sister, Donna Cooper. He was preceded in death by one sister, Karen McFadden.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Mark Ellis Salter, 52, of Denver, NC passed away unexpectedly on October 29, 2023. He was born at 2:49am on June 7, 1971 in Raleigh, NC to Randolph and Martha Salter.

Mark was a very entertaining child. He began walking at just 9 months old and began speaking in full sentences before the age of 1.  His mother Fern, a resident apartment manager would bring Mark around with her. He spoke so well that they believed that Fern was a ventriloquist caring him around. He was beloved by his grandfather, who would steal him away from his mom and show him off to all his friends.

The family moved to Mint Hill when Mark was about 5 years old for athletic opportunities like tee ball, soccer, football, baseball, and he excelled at them all. Along with being an athlete, Mark was very smart and very artistic as he was a skilled drawer. He was even riding a motorcycle before his feet could touch the ground.

He graduated from Independence High School in 1989. He then spent some time in Washington State after graduation before entering the Navy for a short amount of time.  After leaving the Navy, he moved to California and started selling cars. Not long after, his brother Randy went and joined him. California is where he met his first love; boats. Mark and Randy loved to visit their paternal grandparents in Daytona Beach.

Soon after, on Thanksgiving Day 2000 Mark met Nancy in California while she was dropping off her daughter Alexa. As soon as Mark laid eyes on her that was it. He wiggled his way next to her on the couch and they played pinball.  The next summer, Nancy and Alexa moved in with Mark in California on the peninsula in Long Beach. He fell in love with Alexa as hard as he did Nancy. He took ‘his’ daughter under his wing and embraced, championed, supported and protected her like his own. He also had to learn how to love dogs. He loved his “package deal” from the very beginning.

Mark proposed to Nancy outside their house on the beach in 2001 with a banner behind a seaplane. They were married on October 12, 2002.  They spent a lot of time on boats in Long Beach where Mark worked at Long Beach Yacht Sales. They also enjoyed many trips to Catalina where Mark’s captain skills were unparalleled. He was a jack of all trait, he always knew what to do to solve any problem, make friends with all who crossed his path, loved harder and laughed full heartily than anyone.

In 2004, Mark and Nancy welcomed their first son Brayden into the world. He was so excited to throw the ball with his boy. He had him playing soccer and baseball at age 3 and football at age 4. He was so proud of his brilliant and sweet boy. He cried tears of joy when Brayden made the Chancellor’s List.  Three years later in 2007, his second daughter Chloe was born. A fearless adrenaline junky just like her dad. Mark was in awe of her. He encouraged her to try anything and everything. He believed she could do anything she put her mind to. She was his boat parking protégé and he couldn’t have been prouder of her.

Regardless of cost, Mark wanted his family to have the very best. He always said, “I’ll take care of it”. From snowboarding to traveling together as a family, he worked hard to make sure his family got to experience many things and do what made them happy.

The Salter Family moved to North Carolina in 2015. Mark was ecstatic to bring his family back to where he grew up. He was excited to be living close to his best friend and brother Randy, his beloved mother Fern, and join his dad at American Marine Liquidators where he successfully managed the shop and ran the show.

Besides his loving wife, children, and large family; Mark is survived and loved by countless and adoring friends from all across the country.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 3, 2023 from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at The Good Samaritan Funeral Home.  A prayer service will take place on Saturday November 4, 2023 at 2:00PM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church 537 N NC Business 16 Denver, NC 28037. 

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mark may be made to his children’s education in an education fund that will be established at a later date.

July 23, 1942 – October 22, 2023

Concetta “Connie” Andretta, 81, of Denver passed away on October 22, 2023. She was born on July 23, 1942 in Kings County NY to the late Dominick and Dora D’Ascanio.

During her lifetime, Connie was a homemaker caring for her family. She was an accomplished black belt in Karate. She was an avid animal lover. She had a generous heart to many. After her husband passed away, she had a house built in Honduras for poor children and families. The home is dedicated in her husband Robert’s memory. She “adopted” many children (in many foreign countries) supporting them whenever she could. To this day, many of those children have written letters to her.

Besides her parents, Connie is preceded in death by her husband Robert Henry Andretta.

Connie is survived by her children Robert Andretta and his wife Melissa; Donna Marie Scafuro and her husband Leo; and Michael Andretta. As well as her grandchildren Alexandra, Nicolette, Shane and Chris; and her great-grandchildren Leo Jamison and Aaliyah Marie.
